About me

I have been a member of the grey's anatomy community for a few years as I started watching the show during quarantine. The show stuck out to me for its drama and complex characters. The main character (Meredith Grey) has always been through a tremendous amount of trauma. One particular argument was how Meredith reacted after Derek's death. Some may argue that Meredith's actions were inexcusable and that she shouldn't have cut her friends off and should have called Derek's family to say goodbye however I believe that her actions were excusable and heres why.

Background

Meredith and Derek first met at a bar and eventually saw each other at work. She was an intern and he was a neurosurgeon attending.  They had a rocky relationship as he was initially married but eventually divorces his ex-wife (Addison Montgomery). Meredith and Derek got married after and had 3 children. Unfortunately while Meredith was pregnant with their 3rd child, Derek got in a fatal car crash and died in the hospital that night. Since then Meredith has been raising her children by herself and has continued working as a general surgeon at grey-sloan memorial.

Meredith's grief

After Derek passed away, Meredith experienced the 5 stages of grief. According to the American Psychological Association, grief can be an overwhelming feeling and it can heavily affect our brain. According to Harvard Health Publishing, a person goes through the 5 stages of grief: Denial, anger, Bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Meredith experienced all of these stages as she left grey-sloan memorial for a year and cut off her friends and family during that time as she needed time and space for herself. When she came back, some issues came up as a doctor named Penny who was Derek's doctor started working at Grey-Sloan memorial and Meredith started to teach her which was particularly difficult for her at first but eventually became fond of her. This did bother her sister in-law (Amelia Shepard) and they started to argue which made Meredith feel guilty of her actions.

counterargument

Some people may argue that Meredith's actions were inexcusable as she affected her relationships with her friends and family as she left grey-sloan memorial for a year and cut her friends off and eventually got in a argument with her sister in-law (Amelia Shepard) for not calling her while Derek was in emergency surgery. Many people feel that this was particularly cruel of Meredith as should have called his loved ones as well but her grief was also clouding her judgement at the time. Grief can heavily affect the mind and can lead you astray on what you should be thinking about. At the time of Derek's death, she was only thinking about how her and and her children were feeling about this and did not think about friends or family at the time. She had her mind solely focused on Derek which was completely okay as she was reminiscing, missing, and actively grieving the love of her life.
